CANOES ON THE RACQUETTE RIVER 1884
This image was taken on the Racquette River near Potsdam in May of 1884. Boating become the craze of the leisure class after the Civil War. In the late 1870s. J. Henry Rushton (1843-1906) of Canton, built his first boat, a canoe, in 1873. By 1876,
the first national mention of a Rushton boat appeared in Forest and Stream magazine.
By the 1880s, Rushton's boats, canoes and paddles were on display at world's
fairs and expos. Rushton's boat shop in Canton produced a large variety of
watercraft from canoes and rowboats, to guideboats, skiffs, sailboats and
even steam and motor boats. We are researching this image to confirm if these boats are indeed Rushton's. May 13, 14, 15th was the 50th anniversary of the Rushton Canow Races in Canton. For more information on Rushton and the canoe races visit:http://www.slvpaddlers.org/hccwhome.htm
