On Saturday February 12, 2011 Peter Dart of Windham Center, Connecticut and his sister Jennifer Yuris of East Haddam, CT, delivered a portrait of their great, great uncle William Allen Dart to the museum.
Twenty family members gathered at the museum that evening for a dedication ceremony of the portrait painted in the 1860s while Wm Dart was consul-general to the British Provinces of North American (Canada.)
Pictured here are family members from St. Lawrence County, Vermont, and Connecticut that made the pilgrimage to Potsdam for this event. Behind the family is the portrait of "Uncle William and the framed letter signed by Queen Victoria.
William Dart was born in West Potsdam in 1814. During his boyhood he worked on the family farm. He attended St. Lawrence Academy at Potsdam and studied law. In 1834 he became a clerk in the law office in Canton and in 1835 moved to Potsdam to work in the office of Hon. Horace Allen. He was admitted to the bar in 1840. In 1845 he was appointed postmaster of Potsdam. In the fall of 1849 he was elected state senator from the fifteenth district.
In April 1861 he was appointed by President Lincoln district Attorney for Northern New York. He kept that post until 1866. In 1869 he was appointed consul-general of the British Provinces and accompanying his portrait the family gifted the museum a framed letter signed by Queen Victoria stating this position. Wm Dart died in Potsdam in 1890.
